Personal Statement

The history of drama has always intrigued me as it has many movements that have shaped history and the many writers who thought ahead of their time and expressed their thoughts through their work such as Ibsen with A Doll’s House and  Shakespeare with Twelfth night with their ideas of female empowerment and girls dressing as men. For me the fact those different writers have the freedom to express what they believe and help other people see their views and understand them through entertainment is remarkable, throughout history plays have gone through different categories such as stories of warriors and Gods, stories with hidden morals, different writers political and social views and the category of today’s theatre is often mental health and how it effects people. I like performing because it gives me a chance to explore emotions and experiences that I would perhaps not experience in my own life time, the idea that I can become another person and be part of their story has always driven me towards performance which is why I enjoy it so much.

In my previous roles I have made sure that my research is done to truly understand the character I am being asked to portray. When I was asked to play Nora I researched what a woman’s responsibilities would have been in the Victorian era, what she was and wasn’t allowed to do and what society would of thought of Nora suddenly leaving Torvald and how she would have been treated from her peers after the incident. To really understand a character I will also analyse the script and find what emotions are in each line, many lines have hidden meanings or hidden emotions that need to be portrayed along with the main emotion.

The previous shows that I have been working on have allowed me to develop a range of skills like prop making, putting costumes together and fixing costumes along with developing  my own methods. During my first show at Con EAST we had no budget and we had to make our own props, this taught me how to adapt to a situation that I would not be expecting and to also make decisions myself when it comes to making my ideas into a reality. Working on the shows at Con EAST has let me develop my own technique when getting into character which has gained me a feeling of independence and confidence  which has helped in not only the theatre but in everyday life as well.

In the past I have volunteered at a local youth club and would often mean I would have to lead a group of children through different games, this helped me gain confidence in leading and also learning how to keep an audience entertained. Most of the Jobs I have had so far are waitressing and these jobs have taught me how to improvise when something unexpected happens which has really benefitted me in theatre and improvisation it has also helped to handle an unexpected reaction.

I’ve recently gone to Latitude festival in 2017 and I saw a play called “Charlie Fink: Cover My Tracks” a story of a songwriter who mysteriously disappears and his co-worker sets off to find him. Charlie Fink was written by the playwright David Greig and the director Max Webster. I personally loved this little piece of theatre and thought that for two characters it was well pieced together, the play was told as if it was a story and I was hooked from the beginning. After the show I asked if it was okay for me to go and ask the actors a few questions but unfortunately I was denied access due to the actors having to move for their next show.

Shows

The Magic Paintbrush/ The Sly Innkeeper:

In The Magic Paintbrush I was playing the role of the tree and I also handled props during the performance. This piece was mainly physical theatre, the company had to make furniture as this was a street performance and we had to limit our props so they were easy to transport from where we were rehearsing to where we were performing. During the Sly Innkeeper I was a goat and a peasant, this piece expected us to act more than the last because some of the cast were playing animals and had to wear masks. These two performances also meant the company had to make their own props from scratch and find their own costume. We performed in two locations, one was the streets in Bury St Edmunds and in a primary school so we had very different audiences for bother performances and we had to adapt to what audience we were given.

Inspired By Film, Silent Film:

I was playing the captains daughter in this performance (girl in the black dress). This performance was challenging as we had no dialogue. We had to invent what characteristics we each had and over exaggerate them to express them to the audience, no emotion or thought could be missed in this performance as the audience had to follow a storyline. The character I was cast as was the captain’s curious daughter, during the performance the captains crew and I studied and made friends with the aliens on a planet that our ship had landed on before getting chased off by a spider. To prepare us for this performance we watched the first film made “A Trip to the Moon” which was made in 1902. The audience for this performance was an open audience which meant all content of the show had to be friendly for all ages.

Inspired By Film, Breakfast Club:

The group I was in recreated a scene from the film “Breakfast Club” which was released in 1985. The scene we recreated was known as “what’s that ruckus” and I played Allison. Allison in the scene had no lines except a laugh at the end, I watched the film and studied how Allison acted in the background and how she interacted with others conversations (my notes can be seen on the next page). I found this character challenging at first until I started to analyse what she said to others when she opened up to the group and I started to understand why she acted the way she did, I took this and what background of her character was revealed in the film and applied it to the short scene we did. Again this was a performance for all ages but the scene had a very mild drug reference.

 Inspired By Film, Juno:

I had to write my own monologue for this scene. The scene was based on the film Juno a year after she had given her baby up for adoption. Juno had received a letter from the adoptive mum Vanessa along with a picture of her son, Juno begins to reminisce on what could have happened if she had kept the baby. I had to do three different types of research; I looked at how the child might feel knowing that they were adopted at birth, how Juno feels about the experience and how she may feel about the letter along with studying how Juno acts and speaks in the film so I can make sure that the monologue sounds like her. I found it difficult at first to think of the monologue until all the research was done, when I had to get into character I did the same research as I did for Allison in the last scene and applied it to how she would feel in this monologue (my notes can be found on the next page).

Juno

Art and Life, Martha’s Harbour:

This show had the same structure as Inspired by film. I was asked to sing the song “Martha’s Harbour” which was originally performed by All About Eve in 1988. I analysed the song and had to create a character, I found this challenging as many people can view the song differently and might not have followed the character that I was portraying. The show is open for all ages so any material we put in it had to be appropriate for any kind of audience.

Inspired by art

Art and Life, A Doll’s House:

I was asked to play Nora from A Dolls House, I found this role extremely interesting to play. I was asked to do the last scene from the play when Nora Leaves Torvald because she feels as if he is bringing her down and treating her like a child. I and my partner found it very difficult at first to nail how the scene should be played out; there is one underlying emotion but also many hidden emotions in the scene that need to be expressed. The research included in this scene was what Nora’s responsibilities would have been in the era that she lived in so I know what she was and wasn’t allowed to do, Nora leaving Torvald is taboo in her period so I had to think of what she would do as her next steps in life on her own.

Faffington Hall:

The tutors at the college wrote and directed a short murder mystery called “Goings on at Faffington Hall” where I was playing a young girl of a very wealthy family. The basic background of the character was that she has a deceased mother and her father is doesn’t understand allot and her older brother is now in charge of the family affairs such as the business and the estate. Fenella (the character’s name) is fairly spoilt and gets jealous whenever someone gets close to her father. The play was meant for comedic purposes and was also made for all ages.
